THE QUESTION OF WAR
Contribution for a discussion published in Les Cahiers d'étude de la LCI (Ligue des Communistes Internationalistes)

We publish a text of 1935 which, as the title stresses, is a contribution to a debate within the Communist Left on the question of war in capitalism. It's remarkable that, in a period between the two world wars, just after a serie of terrible defeats for the working class (Germany 1917/1923, China 1927, etc.), who were confronted with communist parties in full degeneracy and with a Communist International which was more and more the expression of the Rusian State interests, who were living in the midst of a working class totally confused at the political and ideological levels, a few comrades led against the current a political work of that size and remained faithful, against all the odds, to the cardinal positions of marxism.
If today the proletariat isn't defeated as it was then, if it keeps all its chances in the historical alternative « imperialist war or proletarian revolution », it's confronted back to the question of war in a more and more direct and criticial manner. The vast number of local imperialist conflicts doesn't but express the increasing imperialist rivalries and comes to spead up the polarization between the main imperialist powers. It's at all levels - ideological, political, economical, social, imperialist, militarist - that the States orientate and prepare for war. It's in this framework that the tasks and the responsabilities of the present communist minorities take place.
Through the publication of this document, we want to call the attention of the groups and individuals of the proletarian camp on the method of these comrades, the one of the Communist Left, the one which has to be ours. To remain scrupulously faithful to the principles and the lessons of our class history, to understand the facts and the present events in their logic and to perceive their possible development, to draw analysis and goals for our class, to push for the debate and the discussion on these questions within the proletarian camp and within the proletariat, here are the communists' responsabilities today. And regarding the ones who claim to open up new ways - particularly the ones who reject explicitly or implicitly the alternative « war or revolution » in the name of a « thirds path » or of an « other path » - and who just recycle the olds of opportunism and revisionism of yesterday and of always, we maintain our aim of fighting back their claim of the Communist Left legacy.
